Cutting data load times in half with platform performance optimisation
Discover how we helped Murphy Group improve performance, reduce costs and lay the foundation for scalable analytics.
Murphy Group, a leading UK-based construction and engineering firm, turned to 5Y Technology to improve the performance of its data platform. The Azure Synapse data platform performance was proving a bottleneck, with long processing times, unpredictable reliability and growing operational costs.
By redesigning key architecture elements and streamlining core data processes, we helped Murphy reduce data load times by more than 50% while setting the stage for long-term scalability.
The Challenge
Murphy Group faced persistent performance challenges on its Azure-based data platform. Processing times regularly exceeded five to seven hours, reliability was inconsistent and the architecture lacked the flexibility needed to support future growth. The solution was limited in scope and high in technical debt, making it difficult to scale or adapt to new business requirements.
Murphy needed a performance uplift, but also a strategy to ensure the platform could support analytics across additional systems like HR, Syrinx, Arcura, SuccessFactors and CIS.

The Solution:
5Y performed a comprehensive review of Murphy’s data platform, identifying bottlenecks and recommending the following improvements:
- Migrate to Synapse Link. Replace the deprecated "Export to Data Lake" with Synapse Link for improved speed, resilience and Microsoft alignment.
- Standardise branching and CI/CD. Implement feature branching and automated deployment pipelines to improve code quality and streamline development workflows.
- Simplify ETL workflows. Refactor and automate ETL processes to reduce maintenance effort and increase performance.
- Expand data platform scope. Create a scalable integration plan to incorporate new modules and systems, including HR and supply chain data.
- Strengthen data governance. Introduce a robust data governance framework, including data lineage tracking, metadata management and data quality monitoring.
- Enable self-service analytics. Develop controlled self-service capabilities for business users.

The Results
By focusing on both short-term performance improvements and long-term architectural resilience, we helped Murphy transform their data platform into a more reliable and scalable enterprise solution.
Today, Murphy Group benefits from faster processing, lower costs and a future-ready data foundation:
- Data load times reduced by over 50%
- Processing window times cut
- Improved reliability and platform stability
